Rambles

FRIDAY 29TH MARCH 2019

SPUD, AILEEN, ERNEST, ORLA, PHYLLIS & JEAN

FOUR OF US CAUGHT THE X1 BUS TO ASHTON COURT ESTATE WHERE WE MET JEAN. WE WALKED INTO THE GROUNDS, CLIMBING UPWARDS FOR QUITE A WHILE, PASSING LOTS OF JOGGERS ENJOYING THE PLEASANT DAY AND THE DEER PARK ON OUR LEFT. WE STOPPED FOR A WHILE AND ENJOYED THE MAGNIFICENT VIEWS OVER BRISTOL. SPUD WAS EXPLAINING TO US LESSER MORTALS THE BUILDINGS WE COULD SEE IN THE DISTANCE. OF COURSE, PHYLLIS AND AILEEN WERE GETTING IT WRONG! (WE ARE NOT BRISTOLIANS!). WE EXITED AT THE TOP END OF THE ESTATE AND CROSSED THE ROADS HEADING TOWARDS THE CLIFTON SUSPENSION BRIDGE. BEFORE REACHING THE BRIDGE A FEW OF US ENTERED THE VISITOR CENTRE ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE OF THE ROAD. WE WERE PLEASANTLY SURPRISED TO FIND THEY HAD AUDIO DESCRIPTION RUNNING IN ONE OF THE ROOMS AND BUTTONS TO PRESS ON SOME EXHIBITS EXPLAINING IN AUDIO ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE BRIDGE. AILEEN IS PLANNING A VISIT HERE FOR LATER ON THIS YEAR. CONTINUING OVER THE SUSPENSION BRIDGE (THE TIDE WAS HIGH) WE WALKED ON INTO CLIFTON, ENJOYING VIEWING/TOUCHING SOME OF THE WARES IN A FEW OF THE SHOPS. CONTINUING DOWN CLIFTON HILL, PASSING THE CHESTERFIELD HOSPITAL ON OUR LEFT, WE REACHED LOWER CLIFTON HILL WHICH EVENTUALLY TOOK US TO JACOB WELLS ROAD. FROM HERE WE TURNED RIGHT AT THE TRIANGLE INTO QUEEN’S ROAD WHERE WE STOPPED FOR OUR WELL EARNED LUNCH AT THE BERKELEY, A WETHERSPOONS PUBLIC HOUSE. AFTER LUNCH WE ALL MADE OUR WAY TO BRISTOL BUS STATION. WE HAD PLANNED CATCHING OUR BUSES HOME FROM ST AUGUSTINES PARADE BUT, AS SPUD HAD LEFT ERNEST’S LONG CANE AT THE BUS STOP IN WORLE, WE NEEDED TO ASK AT THE BUS STATION IF IT HAD BEEN HANDED IN. IT HADN’T, NEITHER AT THE BP PETROL STATION ON THE NEW BRISTOL ROAD, NOR IN THE OFFICE IN WESTON. WE HAD AN INTERESTING BUS JOURNEY BACK TO WESTON DUE TO SEVERAL UNEXPLAINED CIRCUMSTANCES. A TWO HOUR JOURNEY! JEAN’S TRIP HOME TO CLEVEDON WAS UNEVENTFUL.

A VERY ENJOYABLE AND ENTERTAINING DAY OUT.

WEATHER QUITE MILD AND SUNNY, BUT WINDY.

LENGTH OF WALK APPROXIMATELY 5 MILES.

FRIDAY 22ND FEBRUARY 2019

AILEEN, SPUD, ERNEST & ORLA

WE BEGAN OUR WALK IN WORLE HIGH STREET. CUTTING UP THROUGH THE PATHS AND LANES UP TO THE WOODS, LEADING TO THE WORLEBURY GOLF COURSE. IT WAS A HARD CLIMB BUT ENJOYABLE, MEETING LOTS OF OTHER WALKERS WITH THEIR DOGS. ORLA WAS ABLE TO HAVE A VERY LONG FREE RUN. WE CONTINUED ON PAST THE MAIN ENTRANCE TO THE GOLF CLUB AND CONTINUED INTO THE MAIN PART OF THE WOODS. LEAVING THE WOODS ALONG WESTON’S TOLL ROAD WE CONTINUED ON TO THE CLAREMONT VAULTS FOR A WONDERFUL LUNCH. AFTER LUNCH TO WALKED ON TOWARDS THE BEACH WHERE ORLA WAS ABLE TO PLAY IN THE WATER. WE THEN CAUGHT THE BUS BACK TO WORLE.

WEATHER – COLD & FOGGY TO BEGIN WITH BUT SUNNY LATER.

LENGTH OF WALK – 5 MILES

THURSDAY 24TH JANUARY 2019

JEAN, ERNEST, ORLA, SPUD AND AILEEN

JEAN, SPUD AND AILEEN WALKED TO WORLE TO MEET ERNEST AND ORLA, CONTINUING ON TO ST. GEORGES, THROUGH THE FOOTPATHS IN NORTH WORLE, TO BEGIN THE RAMBLE.

WE HAD TO CONTINUE ALONG FOOTPATHS TOWARDS THE WIDE GRAVEL PATHS RUNNING ALONG THE EDGE OF FIELDS, THROUGH METAL GATES, ACROSS FIELDS, CROSSING FOOTBRIDGES, WHICH RUN ALONGSIDE THE RHYNES  IN  ST GEORGES. WE EVENTUALLY REACHED THE SIDE ROADS IN WICK ST. LAWRENCE, HEADING TOWARDS THE EBDON ARMS PUBLIC HOUSE, WHERE WE ALL ENJOYED A DELICIOUS MEAL.

AFTER LUNCH WE WALKED BACK TO ST. GEORGES,ACROSS THE FOOTPATHS,  TAKING JEAN TO THE BUS STOP AT ST. GEORGES TURN TO CATCH HER BUS, X5, BACK TO CLEVEDON. WE THEN WALKED ERNEST HOME TO WORLE AND SPUD AND AILEEN WALKED HOME TO MILTON.

A VERY MILD DAY, NO WIND, AND A VERY PLEASANT WALK; ORLA MANAGED TO DO SOME SWIMMING IN THE RHYNES.

LENGTH OF WALK APPROXIMATELY 6 MILES
